Why Arcam ?...
Typical AV and HiFi products have used conventional class A/B, and increasingly class D, amplifiers. While not without compromise, these amps are used because they are reliable and run cool. Really, the best sounding amps are pure class A, which are unfortunately hot and temperamental. Enter class G. This design features two power supplies that allow it to run a much higher level of pure class A before switching into the cooler running high power mode. The result is almost unmatched sound quality, high output and reliability.
The truth is that most AV receivers have had all its functions compressed to a single silicon chip, called a large scale IC (LSI). While great for reducing cost, it is not great for sound and picture quality. Arcam has chosen to go with individual small scale ICs (SSI) for each function, such as inputs switching, op amps, regulation etc. This approach optimizes quality, ensuring that you get great value for the cost. Even better, the same technique is employed whether you buy the entry level AVR550 or the top-of-the-line AV850.
In truly critical areas even small scale ICs aren’t good enough. They alter and distort the sound just enough so that the discerning ears of Arcam’s engineers know they need something better. In these cases, Arcam chooses to use discrete components for resistors, capacitors, etc., whether full-size or SMD. This adds cost, but the performance gained is immeasurable. The trick is to know what to do and when, and Arcam’s 40+ years in the business give them the know-how to make the right call.
High performance amplifier volume control is paramount to its final performance, even on AV receivers. Get it wrong, and even the best digital processing and powerful amplifiers won’t help. Arcam goes to great lengths to ensure that the volume controls impart the minimum amount of distortion, while still operating smoothly and efficiently. Yes, thats even true for Arcam AV, something you aren’t likely to see in mass manufactured products.
