In the world of hi-fi, luxury and bargains aren’t typically found in the same sentence. However, the Ear is ready to make the argument that the Rega Elex Mk4 is a hi-fi bargain. After all, it was the recipient of the title of “The Ear: Best Buy” in 2023. Let’s take closer look this integrated amplifier and find out if it lives up to the hype.
The Rega Elex Mk4 is Rega’s latest “value” amplifier and it really has been in its own category for many years. With Rega being one of the oldest hi-fi brands in the game, the Elex Mk4 really stands alone in its own right. The Elex Mk4 is actually Rega’s second tier amplifier coming in above the entry level IO amplifier. There have been some noticeable changes between this generation and the previous both on the inside and outside.
The Mk4 resembles much of what Rega has been implementing over the last few years in terms out exterior looks. It’s a sleek black casing with minimal controls on the front. A new addition to the front is the inclusion of a headphone jack. You’ll also find new digital inputs on the back of the amp. The Elex Mk4 has a driving output of 72 Watts per channel which is capable of getting the job done on most speakers.
How does it sound? The Ear describes the sound as “uncannily engaging” (The Ear). It’s able to bring out the very core of the record in a way that other amplifiers are unable to. The timing is extremely accurate with no lag. For the price point, it’s hard to find another amplifier that is this snappy and at this price point.
