Rega Planar 6 RS: High-End Performance, Perfectly Refined

Posted by The Sound Organisation on Jun 30th 2026

Rega’s turntable range is one of the most comprehensive available, but a gap at the crucial $3,000 turnkey price point left room for something special. As reviewed by Ed Selley in hi-fi+ Issue 256, the Rega Planar 6 RS is a brilliant bit of engineering that uses exclusive, non-orderable upgrades to push performance firmly into high-end territory while maintaining the brand's signature simplicity.

The Planar 6 has long marked the crossover point between Rega's traditional plinth designs and its skeletal flagships. It features a full-size plinth crafted from ultra-lightweight TanCast 8 foam, which is now wrapped in a gorgeous aluminium high-pressure laminate skin.Visually, the proportions are utterly perfect; Selley notes that the range's former "ugly duckling" grey finish has officially been transformed into a striking, premium swan.

Instead of altering the standard Neo Mk2 PSU, which is already a stellar fitment shared with the pricier Planar 8, Rega focused its upgrades directly on the mechanical and playback interface. The aluminium sub-platter now utilizes a twin-belt design pre-fitted with dual EBLT belts for better spin-up speed and pitch stability. For the tonearm, the RS borrows the higher-spec RB880 from the Planar 8, featuring precision vertical bearings that offer superior tracking accuracy. Completing the package is the top-tier Nd9 moving-magnet cartridge, which utilizes an advanced neodymium magnet system and a stiff boron cantilever mated via an ultra-fine watchmaker-engineered connecting tube.

Sonically, the Rega Planar 6 RS delivers exactly what a Rega should, permeating the listening experience as a beautifully complementary whole. It is astonishingly articulate, bringing a ballistic, rhythmic energy to high-tempo tracks while allowing delicate, transient piano nuances to rise from a silent background with absolute immediacy. This isn’t a simple reproduction of music; it’s an immersive performance.

That signature speed doesn’t sacrifice low-end authority, offering a textured, "felt as well as heard" bass that challenges traditional assumptions about mass and analogue playback. True to modern Rega voicing, it avoids artificial, cossetting warmth, opting instead for a clean, cohesive, and remarkably wide soundstage that extends far beyond the physical placement of the speakers.

The Verdict: By combining an impressively straightforward setup with the domestic practicality of a full-sized, hinged lid, the Rega Planar 6 RS represents an incredible balance of prettiness, user-friendliness, and sheer musical joy. It is a fantastic, turnkey deck that provides all the analogue performance most listeners will ever need.
