In late 2024, Rega has introduced the Planar 3 RS Edition, an enhanced version of its acclaimed Planar 3 turntable. This "Rega Special" edition incorporates technology from Rega's higher-end models, aiming to bridge the gap between the standard Planar 3 and the more advanced Planar 6. Priced at  $1795, the Planar 3 RS Edition offers audiophiles premium features at a competitive price point that sits comfortable attainable while still not comprising on quality. While many are definitely excited to get their hands on it, we've heard quite a few people ask "What makes it better than a normal Planar 3?" Luckily, What Hi-Fi? has done their homework and compared the two turntables.

What Hi-Fi? is no stranger to the Rega Planar 3, as evidenced by their 2024 review of the updated Planar 3 and subsequently naming it one of their Best Turntables of 2024. In early 2025, they were among the first to review the Planar 3 RS Edition. The RS Edition builds upon the standard Planar 3 by integrating several notable upgrades. It comes equipped with the Nd5 moving-magnet cartridge, an external Neo Mk2 power supply unit, and a Reference EBLT drive belt. These enhancements are designed to elevate the turntable's performance, providing greater clarity, detail, and dynamic range. The inclusion of components from higher-tier models reflects Rega's commitment to delivering exceptional sound quality in this special edition.

In terms of design, the Planar 3 RS Edition maintains the sleek aesthetics of its predecessor while incorporating a bespoke plinth design. Using a new brushed aluminum finish, this refined appearance not only enhances its visual appeal but also contributes to improved acoustic performance. "It looks elegant and sleek," noted the What Hi-Fi reviewers, "with high gloss black edges that add a subtle mirror-like effect and complement the dark metal finish in a way that looks premium without being too flashy." The turntable's build quality and attention to detail underscore Rega's dedication to craftsmanship and high-fidelity audio reproduction.

So, is the Planar 3 RS worth the extra $200 compared to the normal Planar 3? What Hi-Fi put both decks head to head to decide it it was truly worth the extra investment. According to What Hi-Fi?:

"By putting the two decks side by side to directly compare their performances, our in-house reviewers can confidently say that they are. Particularly thanks to that bespoke plinth, the RS Edition delivers a clear step up in performance that is more than worth the extra outlay...We were pretty effusive in our Planar 3/Nd3 review; the RS Edition delivers even more of what we like so much about the Planar 3. Considering the RS Edition is fitted with the level-up Nd5 cartridge and, of course, introduces upgrades elsewhere too, we somewhat expected its performance to trump that of the standard Planar 3 – and indeed it does. The RS Edition builds on the standard Planar 3's high-calibre sound with extra clarity, detail and muscle, plus the ability to convey an even greater sense of space and openness."

So there you have it. While the Planar 3 remains an all-around great investment for your sound system, if you have the extra budget to opt for the RS edition, then you get more than a fancy new plinth; you get a noticeable increase in performance and added ease of use thanks to the included Neo Mk2 power supply. As What Hi-Fi added, "That’s not to say that the standard Planar 3 isn’t worth considering anymore. It remains a nimble, expressive and hugely enjoyable and recommended deck for its price level, and will undoubtedly satisfy owners who cannot stretch to the RS Edition’s asking fee."
