Revisiting the Rega Planar 3 featuring the new Nd3 Cartridge
Posted by The Sound Organization on Aug 20th 2024
The Rega Planar 3 gets even better. It’s all thanks to the brand new Nd3 cartridge that Rega recently unveiled. The Planar 3 has remained at the top of its game for many decades now. It boasts premium quality at an entry level for new hi-fi enthusiasts. Let’s check out how the new Nd3 cartridge takes it to the next level.
In terms of looks, you won’t find many differences. The Planar 3 has remained pretty consistent in exterior looks ever since its redesign in 2016. In 2024 you do get 4 finish options to choose from: black, white, red, and light oak.
New for 2024 is the inclusion of the Nd3 cartridge. The Nd3 is the entry level of three new cartridge options. But what makes the deal even more enticing is the cost didn’t go up. It’s the exact same pricing for the original pairing of the Planar 3 with the Elys 2. It does feel somewhat refreshing to see that in the world of constant price increases, Rega held back on this one.
The Nd cartridge system has been in the works at Rega for well over a decade now. They claim they are the first company to implement neodymium in their moving magnet cartridges. Where the biggest change comes into play is the choice of the stylus tip. The Nd3 utilizes a basic elliptical point, but the upgrades quickly become more intense the higher you move up the rankings to cartridges like the Nd5 and Nd7.
Upon first listen, it seems that the cartridge upgrade is noticeable everywhere. It appears to elaborate more on records that the listener are familiar with. Revealing details and vocal textures not heard before. The sound is overall cleaner and more refined.
